Celebrate Songkran Festival In Beautiful Koh Samui

Dust off your water guns because it’s Songkran season again in Thailand – one of the biggest water festivals in the world! Get ready for a splashtastic Songkran festival on the shores of Koh Samui at Kimpton Kitalay. This year, join us for an unforgettable Songkran experience with many exciting activities, gourmet food and poolside fun.

Songkran, the Buddhist New Year, is commemorated with a three-day public holiday. The core of this celebration is the symbolic act of washing away the previous year’s misfortunes and welcoming a fresh start. But now, instead of being a one-day celebration, this ancient tradition has grown into what may be the biggest water fight festival in the world. Thousands of tourists worldwide flock to Thailand during this once-in-a-lifetime celebration, and Koh Samui is one of the top beachside destinations to celebrate the Songkran festival, thanks to its beautiful tropical settings and phenomenal island culture.

Explore what we have in store for you at Kimpton Kitalay’s Songkran festival in Koh Samui.

Start Songkran With Blessings For The New Year

13 April 2024
10:00 – 10:15 am. Ceremony at the spirit house
10:15 – 10:30 am. Alms-giving ceremony at the lobby
10:30 – 11:15 am. Monk ceremony at LANAI Annex

Our Songkran festivities commence on April 13 with a morning dedicated to traditions and blessings from monks to reel in a prosperous new Thai year. A short ceremony will be held at our hotel’s spirit house, a small shrine honoring protective spirits. This will then be followed by an alms-giving ceremony in the lobby. In Thai culture, alms-giving to monks is considered a means of merit-making. Making merit is crucial to one’s well-being and spiritual development, bringing positive karma and contributing to better fortunes in the next life. Next, we will have a monk ceremony at our LANAI Annex, where monks will accept offerings from our guests – a beautiful display of respect and generosity. You can offer food, daily items, and monastery supplies, among other items. Remember to be respectful of local customs and dress appropriately for this occasion!

Cultural Performances And Ceremonies

11:30 – 12:00 am. Traditional Thai folk performance with long drum parade
12:00 – 12:30 am. Water-pouring ceremony “Rod Nam Dam Hua”

Our festivities will take a more energetic turn as midday approaches with a traditional Thai folk performance and a long drum parade. Enjoy the rhythmic beats as vibrant dancers clad in colorful costumes snake their way through our resort grounds to the beat of the drums. If this is your first time in Thailand, it’s a great way to get acquainted with traditional Thai customs for Songkran festivals in Koh Samui.

We then move on to our ‘Rod Nam Dam Hua’ ceremony. This traditional water-pouring ritual signifies washing away bad luck and ushering in good fortune for the new year. Join in on the fun and drench loved ones with water using colorful flower bouquets.
